In Memoriam - Former Headmaster Tony Eggleston OBE (1928-2021)

During the Christmas break, we received the sad news that former Headmaster, and much-loved member of the Felsted community, Tony Eggleston OBE, died peacefully on 26th  December 2021.

He led the school from 1968-1982 and his impact was significant, although he is probably best remembered for bringing girls into the sixth form in 1970 - introducing co-education to Felsted years ahead of many other independent schools.

Tony Eggleston arrived, with his wife Jane, having received an OBE for community cohesion through his leadership of the English School in Nicosia, during the turbulent early years of an independent Cyprus.

His fourteen years at Felsted coincided with a period of considerable social change which was mirrored within the school.  Academic performance and the breadth of the curriculum both grew and, with that, an emphasis on personal development through co-curricular activities and especially community service and outreach - notably the partnership with the pioneering charity PHAB, bringing together disabled and non-disabled young people to share academic and social challenges side by side.

At the end of 1982, the Egglestons moved to the Campion School in Athens, leaving an enduring legacy both on the life of the school and the village.

Our longest-standing current member of teaching staff, Richard Feldman, Director of Data Administration, remembers: 'Tony was Headmaster when I first joined the school in 1981. He was a deeply caring Head, with a lot of integrity. He knew all the pupils so well.'

Our thoughts are with Tony’s family at this sad time.
