Poppy Named as Saracens Mavericks U19 Captain

Head girl Poppy T has been selected as captain for the U19 Superleague Saracens Mavericks Team 2021.

Poppy has been playing netball since she started Felsted Prep School in 2009 and was selected for the first team in Year 9. During her time with the Senior school team, Poppy has been on tour to Barbados in 2018 and was part of the team who competed at the 2020 National School Finals. She has also been mentored by Netball coaches Lindsay Keable and Lucy Barrett and was selected for the Saracens Mavericks and Surrey Storm academy pathways. She is now captain of the Felsted 1st team.

Poppy was recently nominated and selected as a Sporting Champion. Everyone Active’s Sporting Champions scheme provides funding and support for talented Athletes. Launched in 2016 and supported by one of the country’s most recognised sporting talents, Colin Jackson CBE, the scheme has already helped many athletes on their journey to become a national and international sporting success with mentoring and specialist training. Athletes in the scheme are able to use the highest standard of facilities for their ongoing training. Becoming a sporting hero comes with a financial burden and, for many athletes, they will also be provided with funding support to help pay for training, equipment, travel and competition costs.

Poppy joined the Saracens Mavericks pathway academy in 2018 at the age of 15 and was soon selected to trial for the U17 NPL squad. She won ‘Most Improved Player’ in 2018 where she competed in the NPL competition making the finals and becoming a Silver Medal Winner at National Performance League Netball Competition at Nottingham University. Poppy was then selected for the U19 long squad at the end of 2020 and is now delighted to have been selected as Captain for the 2021 season – her fourth season with Saracens Mavericks.

Outside of Felsted, Poppy plays for Turnford Netball, which is in the top division of the East Regional League. This squad is a combination of seasoned and young talent with many junior internationals and NPL players represented. Poppy is the youngest member of the team and won ‘Most Valuable First Team Player’ for the 2019 season and ‘Most Improved Player’ for the 2020 season
