National Aegon Tennis Success 2020

By Oli B, Year 13

Seb M-M, Jason W-M, Kit M-J and myself set off for the Aegon National Tennis Finals on Wednesday 11 March, accompanied by Ms Marriott-Cox and Ms Griffith. Unfortunately, Christophe K was unable to make it due to academic commitments. After a calming journey, we reached the Premier Inn where we would stay the night. Following a lovely dinner and some great company we headed for bed and woke early the next morning. With a full English fuelling us all, we reached Gosling sports centre at 8:00am.

The first set of matches saw us play Bradfield College which was a very competitive few games. Unfortunately we came out with a narrow loss of 2-4 matches but the boys gave it their all and were pumped for the final matches of the day against Eastbourne. Kit (1st seed) had a very enduring match which saw him just miss out on the win during a final set tie break. Similarly, Seb showed his determination but was yet to gain the upper hand against a very consistent opponent losing 5-7.

Jason and myself, through a frustrating few games, managed to edge our way to victory over our singles and doubles matches which left Kit and Seb with the last match of the day. Up against a very strong set of players, the scores were levelled out with Felsted and Eastbourne both winning three matches each, resulting in a final set championship tie break played by Kit and I. Having won the crucial first few points we pushed on and with determination were able to win 10-6 placing us 3rd on the day! It was wonderful to have family and supporters watching us. Well played to all the boys, and many thanks to Ms Griffith and Ms Marriott-Cox for supporting us all the way’.

Finishing in third place at this event places us either third or fourth in the country, an incredible achievement! Due to the current COVID-19 situation and the finals being split into two days, our national rank will be finalised later in the year.
