OF Professor Toby Walsh (a77-82) has been elected a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) for his contributions to the field.

Professor Walsh is a leading researcher in Artificial Intelligence and Scientia Professor of Artificial Intelligence at UNSW in Sydney, an Australian Research Council (ARC) Laureate Fellow and leads the Algorithmic Decision Theory group at CSIRO’s Data61. He is named among the world’s best scientists and widely recognised for his work to advance artificial intelligence.

“I am very honoured to be elected a Fellow of the ACM, the premier scientific society for computing,” Professor Walsh said. “I have been lucky over the years, to have worked with many fantastic colleagues and students who have contributed to my research and whom I wish to thank. It's been a fascinating journey which began many years ago with learning to program at Felsted School on the legendary Elliott 803 under the watchful eye of CCHD.”

The ACM Fellows program recognises the top 1 percent of ACM members for their outstanding accomplishments in computing and information technology and/or outstanding service to ACM and the larger computing community. Fellows are nominated by their peers, with nominations reviewed by a distinguished selection committee.

In November 2020, Professor Walsh was also elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) for intellectual leadership and significant contributions to automated deduction, constraint programming and fairness in AI.
