Year 10 Careers Day - Inspiring Futures

By Ms L Scofield

Our Year 10 Careers Day on Monday 12 June was a rousing success with students choosing either a STEM or Enterprise option. In school, the Enterprise students had a ‘Go Green' activity for the day where groups of students were challenged to provide a brand new service or product on behalf of NATWEST.  STEM students visited BT’s Adastral Park in Ipswich to find out more about the tech of the future.

The Natwest challenge involved a whole process from inception, design, marketing, costings, branding and finally presentation to judges, which ran smoothly with students being challenged to go out of their comfort zone, work with people who they had not worked with before and be creative and innovative.

Groups were whittled down to a semi final, and the grand finale was held before judges; Mr Townsend, Head, and Mr Castle, Head of Economics. Despite the heat, students were impeccably behaved as expected at Felsted, engaged, creative and full of surprises in their approach to this challenge.  The winners were Team HEAP and their product was a kinesthetic energy store built within the track of F1 cars to generate energy to be used to power the cars.  This  was one of the most unusual, ingenious ideas seen and Mr Townsend commented on the real potential for this to be scaled-up worldwide. The National Finals will be held in July in Birmingham and our winners have the opportunity to attend.

At Adastral Park, students heard about opportunities for careers in research and application, and were told that we were at the heart of the world network, hence why it is a high security site. We learned about the way 5G is enabling incredible advances in tech, including remote operating in a medical setting. Students are pictured in holographic form, beamed from an adjacent room!

We look forward to our Futures Conference on 21 June and our Years 8 and 9 Careers Day which is on 26 June.
