Wellbeing Week at The Prep School

There are a variety of different events happening this week to coincide with our Wellbeing Week focus on online-safety. It is with weeks like these, that we can especially champion pupil and parent voice across the four Phases and I hope that what follows below is a snapshot of what has been happening so far this week. Breck Foundation Parent Talk

PSHE Parent Drop-In

Thank you to all of those who were able to attend this on Monday this week. We discussed a great deal about the changing nature of what it means to ‘be online’ for our children. I have collated some of our thoughts and feedback from our session and hope that the links are helpful in promoting further discussions and action that you may wish to take with your own children. 

Building effective dialogue is everything when it comes to having open conversations with children about online safety. When an adult begins a conversation with curiosity about asking their children about the online world, this is likely to bring more engagement from them in return. Sentence starters like ‘Can you tell me a bit about…?’ ‘What new skills can you show me online…?’ and ‘Tell me about what you’ve found out…’ are a great way in. Further advice on having conversations about online safety with children can be found on the NSPCC website. 

Further information on adjusting and building-up the privacy settings on your family’s devices can also be found here. Internet Matters helpfully goes through how the settings can be further secured on smartphones, search engines, broadband, social media and games consoles. Further online safety guides for parents can also be accessed here. These are really worth checking out. 

Support Networks in School 

We continue to emphasise the importance to all pupils of speaking with their Form Tutor, Head of Phase or another relevant member of staff in-school if they are concerned about their own (or another student’s) wellbeing. An anonymous app called ‘Whisper’ is also available for our pupils to use on the Felsted Homepage if they would like to raise a concern anonymously. Responses are sent to our Director of Safeguarding, Mrs O’Brien. 


These are a much safer way for children to represent themselves online, as they are not a real photograph of an individual. These are highly recommended and could even be a good starting point of discussion with children about positive online safety. 

Wellbeing Week PSHE Activity on online safety

Across the Prep School, we have used PSHE lessons and Assembly time this week to build further dialogue around building positive online safety. Below are the questions we have asked each Phase, along with a small sample of pupil responses.

How can technology help us everyday? 

How can we use it to look after mental and physical health?

  • Use a search engine to look for physical exercises you are interested in so you can learn new skills.

  • Listen to stories on your iPad or Yoto.

  • Hospitals use technology to support physical health.

  • Using Google to search for healthy recipes.

‘Technology has changed how we behave with one another…’ Is this always for the better?

  • Technology can make us appear more impatient, because we expect an answer straight away. It can affect our concentration.

  • We might find it more challenging to have face-to-face conversations because we chat online more instead. 

  • Technology affects how much time that you spend with your friends. 

  • We need to be careful when being online, but we can still have fun.

  • Being on a screen too long can make you feel grumpy. It’s important to get outside.


Do you have to always be online to catch-up with your friends? 

Give examples of some positive phrases and comments that you would use when talking online to each other.

  • No, not always. We could - write a letter, catch-up at school, plan a playdate, go to the park or just go and see them.

  • Use positive phrases online like: You know how I enjoy spending time with you… | How are you? | Have a lovely evening. I can’t wait to see you next time. | Are you feeling okay? | What have you been up to today?

How important is the language we use online when it comes to communicating with each other? 

What sort of image does it create of ourselves?

Can it influence our opinions and feelings towards others? 

Give some simple, practical tips for clear, positive communication. 

  • To think before we speak. 

  • Understand the implications of what you are saying. Be aware something could be taken in the wrong way (misunderstandings). 

  • Don’t say something to someone unless you would be happy to say it in person. Treat people how you wish to be treated.

  • Be thoughtful about the person behind the account. 

  • No “I’m just joking”.

  • Report those who are saying things they shouldn’t be - screenshot.
