The Towers of Terror

By Mr D Maclean, Teacher of DTE

The first week returning after half term saw Year 5 DTE pupils finishing their newspaper towers which was linked to learning focused around structures.  This included developing their understanding of the different types of structures and how they can be made more stable and rigid, through key designing and constructing using 'triangulation'.

All pupils worked in teams, or as individuals, and encountered lots of problem-solving through the task. They produced a digital portfolio of their work via Google Classroom which evidenced their journey through this project.

The one thing that was evident throughout the project was their determination and resilience.  Almost all teams / individuals had issues with their towers collapsing at some point and they all picked themselves up, dusted themselves off and started again rethinking their design.

Well done to everyone! The team / individual with the tallest tower in each group will receive prizes and certificates in their Prep Assembly.

Pupils now move onto their next project which will see them creating a geometric design desk tidy.  Watch out for next month's newsletter for photos of our budding designer-makers in action.
