Sixth Form Psychologists Meet OF Jerry Cripps

This week, students of Psychology were lucky enough to have a very open session with OF and clinical psychologist, Jerry Cripps. After introducing himself, Mr Cripps was very transparent about his own mental health battles and how they influenced his decision to become a psychologist. Happy to answer any questions, Cripps explained that he was sectioned, emotionally drained and in a personal crisis. When he regained and rebuilt his personality, he volunteered through helping vulnerable people at charities such as MIND, before becoming a psychologist. The most intriguing point he made was that his proudest moment, even after helping hundreds of patients, was learning from the mistakes he made early on in his career. An eye-opening yet informative talk that helped us to gain a deeper knowledge of Psychology and its applications in life. Thank you Jerry

Speaking to the clinical psychologist allowed us as students to gain a deeper insight into some of the parts of working in this field. It was especially interesting for someone like myself as well as others in our year who are hoping to study different stems of psychology, as it opened our eyes to what working as a clinical psychologist entails. Whilst chatting and discussing with him, it was incredibly interesting to hear some of the stories he had to tell about his time working with different types of cases through his years working. We had the opportunity to ask questions that we wanted to hear more about, such as what age groups are the most interesting, or the hardest, to work with. We were greatly intrigued listening to his past experiences and how they shaped him into wanting to work in this field, using his expertise to help others. Overall, it was a great experience for us as students to hear first hand what it takes to work in this field.
