Year 4 took part in the ‘Protecting Our Planet Webinar’. They listened to scientists talk about the effect of deforestation, went on board the RRS Discovery (whose work is studying the impact of climate change on the oceans) and were shown around the Mountain Forest in the Alps.
The children were then challenged to design a system to slow the rate of water flow down a hillside. They used a model with marbles to represent the water. The children worked in groups using their problem solving, communication and teamworking skills to see who could get the marbles to the bottom of the hillside in the longest amount of time. By using a series of obstacles created from easily accessible materials, this replicated the best flood defences to slow the rate of water running down a hill.
