Prep Boys' Rugby Match Reports (Dec '22)

U13
A hugely successful and enjoyable season for the U13A team. Injury, warm weather, freezing weather, long journeys have all featured. From the outset in September it was clear that there was going to be much competition for places in the team with 41 contact playing Year 8 boys which is more than we have had in the last few years. This created a very competitive environment and every training session was of a high skill level full of coachable and willing players. Unfortunately injury did have an impact on some of our leaders within the group but it gave the opportunity for others to step up and take that role within the group which was done with huge maturity. It is excellent to have a season where it can be said that our only losses were genuinely to better teams where we learnt so much, for the 11 wins this season we were the better team or at the right stages of the game when things wer tough, played with excellent tempo, were direct and relentless in defence. Notable wins were against Oundle, St Faiths and Framlingham. A very enjoyable group to coach and I look forward to beginning our VIIs programme in the New Year.

U12A
Probably one of the best seasons I have seen from an U12A team. The squad has been a pleasure to coach. From the first to last game they have shown full commitment and this culminated in an undefeated season, seeing off Ipswich in the last game. The strength of the team was defence, they simply closed down every opposition, and turned many defensive sets into quick pacey attacks.

U11A
It has been a pleasure to have been involved with this group of boys for a second year running and to have experienced the path they have been on over the past two years. They have gone from strength to strength and turned themselves into a set of rugby players. They are able to read the game, support each other, pass the ball well and are formidable in defence. In this year group, we only have a relatively small number of boys to choose from who do contact rugby, but what we lack in quantity, we more than make up for in quality. Each one of them should be very very proud of themselves. Thank you to them and the team of coaches who had input into their development.

U11B
A bitterly cold day at Bishop's Stortford saw the U11B team secure a win which gave them the fantastic achievement of an unbeaten season. The side improved with every match they played and at times played some very good rugby. We have some very talented players in the team and I look forward to watching them progress in the future.
Finally a big thank you to all the parents who turned up to cheer on the team in all weathers.

U10A
What a season, started off with some brilliant performances, a great win in the first match, and the second. The boys trained really well and developed in all aspects of play, especially having missed a year of contact rugby. The main focus was the tackle and this really showed during matches. The highlight for me was our resilience and tenacity in two tough matches.  The boys learnt so much in an hour of rugby that will certainly stand them in good stead for next year. A great team ethos that was supportive and courageous. Well done to all, a fantastic term’s rugby.

U10B
In what was a season full of learning for the boys, they applied themselves very well in training sessions and in matches. The energy brought by them for every match was infectious and as we started learning the game better the results became better. The rugby played by the boys at times was a joy to watch and I look forward to watching them progress through the school. Our most notable performance was against Holmwood House in which was a strong display from start to finish.
