Positive Noticing Day: the power of the positive
Positive Noticing Day took place on Wednesday this week and staff and pupils all took great pleasure in marking the day by raising the profile of noticing the positive actions and attributes of each other.
Positive Noticing is simple, practical and highly effective. It is an everyday action which happens at Felsted any time, any place. Catching children doing the right thing and marking it with positive acknowledgement is not just kindness, it models and reinforces the actions and conduct which creates a positive community. We know that you get more of the behaviours or attributes that you notice most and the impact of positive noticing is both immediate and long-lasting. It helps build self-esteem and confidence in children and shifts the culture in the community so that positive interactions and attributes are always the most sought after.
Children in Cloisters used their PSHE session to link with the teaching and discussion around anti-bullying to consider the impact of positive noticing versus negative comments on us as people. We then created personalised wristbands for a pupil in our form, detailing a positive that they had observed about that person. Wristbands were then shared and worn around the school. The statements were insightful and personal and children proudly shared them with each other and adults around the school.
“Everyone gets a comment about them which makes them feel really good about themselves.” Seb R (Year 6)
“It is a chance for people to really acknowledge and tell their friends how they make them feel and gives a chance to tell them how much they mean to them.” Todd N (Year 6)
“If somebody is feeling down, they can always read their message and remember how much someone cares about them.” Tilly S (Year 5)
