Geography Field Trip to Epping Forest
by Miss Thorogood
On a sunny day in June, Year 7 made their way to Epping Forest to take part in their Geography field work. The first part of the day involved looking at soil geology found at the source of the drainage basin, and all pupils enjoyed analysing the soil samples and their textures.
The pupils also enjoyed a scientific element to the day, carrying out an Ecosystem walk within the forest. After drawing hypothesis and outlining their methods, the group transferred from the field centre to Debden Brook, it was time to don their wellington boots to collect river data!
The 2 groups visited 2 different sites to compare, velocity, channel width and depth, and load size and shape. This data will be used back in the classroom. Pupils also learned a new skill of being able to draw a field sketch, which is a useful method of qualitative data. It was a fantastic day putting theory into practice, and embedding the skills needed to progress to GCSE.
