Charlie C's Olympic Adventure

Charlie C's Olympic Adventure

Now that Charlie C has arrived back in the UK after his extraordinary experience competing for Team GB in the Winter Youth Olympic Games 2024, his parents have kindly shared an update with us:

Charlie has had a wonderful time in South Korea with Team GB. To say it has been life changing for him, is no exaggeration.

GB Snowsport, Team GB and the IOC looked after all the athletes fantastically. From the moment Charlie arrived at the airport to fly out, to arriving back in the UK to a very noisy welcoming committee, he said he has felt ‘like a celebrity’. Whilst in the Olympic Village the athletes were all treated to a full programme of events each day. The focus being on interacting with, not only their fellow GB athletes, but the 1900 other athletes from 78 nations.

The athletes were all given small pins to swap with other countries, the aim being to collect a pin from every other nation and attaching them to your lanyard.

Another highlight for Charlie was being selected to represent Team GB, hosting the British Ambassador and Deputy Ambassador to South Korea and giving them a tour of the Athlete Village.

He has come away with many new friends from around the world and memories that will last a lifetime.

Charlie was one of the youngest Ski Cross athletes in the Games and the competition was tough! In temperatures of -25, he held his own right the way through nearly 3 hours of heats. An unfortunate slip at the start of his final heat, saw him slip to 14th in his panel and unable to progress into the semi-finals. At this level, the margins of error are tiny, with only 100th of a second separating the competitors.

Charlie’s attitude was excellent and he continued to savour every minute of being an Olympian, bringing back mementos and souvenirs of this incredible experience.

Due to his fantastic performance in the heats, Charlie’s Junior World Ranking has now risen from 132nd to 27th, which for a 16 year old from a country with no discernible mountains, is no small feat!

Moving forward, Charlie has been identified for the Team GB pathway qualification programme for the European Youth Olympic Festival to be held in Georgia next year and the World Junior Championships to be held in Canada (TBC), later this year. These are two big goals to aim for before the next two adult Winter Olympic Games.
