I recently performed for the fourth time with the London Schools Symphony Orchestra (LSSO) at The Barbican in the Double Bass section.
We spent most of the Christmas holidays rehearsing for a very elaborate performance which was a combination of an Opera and Symphony Orchestra titled Music from The Dark Side. We performed music inspired by the Faust legend. It was amazing to meet and work with legendary Shakespearean actress Dame Janet Suzman who narrated during the concert and reads from John Milton’s Paradise Lost, Christopher Marlowe’s Dr Faustus and Johann von Goethe’s Faust. I also enjoyed working with Fiona Kimm mezzo-soprano from the Royal Opera House and Collin Shay countertenor, Brenton Spiteri tenor and Thomas Mole bass-baritone.
Our Conductor was the amazing Sian Edwards and she lead us through a programme of:
- Readings from Milton's Paradise Lost
- Mendelssohn Prelude to Die Erste Walpurgisnacht
- Readings from Marlowe's Dr Faustus
- Liszt Mephisto Waltz No 1
- Berlioz Witches Rakoczy March
- Reading from Goethe's Faust
- 'Ride to the Abyss & Pandemonium' from The Damnation of Faust
- Schnittke Faust Cantata
I am looking forward to a variety of projects this term such as the Imagine Children’s Festival where I will be performing with the Chineke! Junior Orchestra. In half term I will spend a day with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and will go on a residential course with the NYO Inspire Ensemble in Liverpool, where I have been offered a place on the Double Bass. In the Easter holidays I am again on residential course with the National Youth String Orchestra (NYSO).
