NYO Workshop at Felsted Prep

By Sana AJ, Year 12

In June 2021, Felsted’s Shesh and Sana AJ, as part of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, delivered a workshop to a group of musicians in the prep school ranging from years 5-8.

The workshop was based on NYO’s current theme called “The Hope Exchange” where, as an orchestra, we are spreading hope to young musicians across the country as we come out of lockdown. Also to encourage people to continue playing music and enjoying playing with other musicians, which is something we haven’t been able to do for a very long time.

As part of “The Hope Exchange”, members of the NYO are going into schools to deliver workshops to engage with other musicians and to hopefully inspire them to keep their music going.

In the workshop we spoke about NYO and also performed to the students, including a performance of a medley of pieces we created as a response to pieces of music which the students said brought them hope.

Later in the workshop, we helped the students to explore their creativity by encouraging them to create their own pieces of music based on different musical elements, emotions and photos. We both really enjoyed delivering the workshop and hope that all the musicians enjoyed taking part, it was great to have live music happening in school again!
