Felstedians Perform at the Queen Elizabeth Hall

During the Easter holiday Sana and Shesh Abu-Jabir (Yr 8 and 10), along with Charles Campbell-Peek (Yr 10) started rehearsals with the amazing Chineke! Junior Orchestra, where Sana is the Timpanist/Percussionist and Charles and Shesh are leaders of the basses.

The orchestra was part of a very important event at the Queen Elizabeth Hall marking the first Stephen Lawrence Day (22 April). It was a very moving event as Baroness Doreen Lawrence and her family were present at the concert and one of the pieces the orchestra played was written for Stephen after he was so tragically murdered.

Sana and Shesh have also been involved with several other orchestras throughout the holidays, rehearsing and performing.

They both spent 10 days with the London Schools Symphony Orchestra (LSSO), Sana is on percussion and Shesh on double bass, rehearsing for their upcoming concert on 9 May 2019 at the Barbican Concert hall and for their summer tour to Czech Republic and Slovakia.

In between LSSO rehearsals, Sana took a day out to work with with BBC Young Musician (BBCYM) finalist Maxim Calver (Cello) and pianist Gorka Plada-Giron at the Wethersfield Chamber Concert which is part of a series of concerts.
She will return to this on Sunday, working with another BBCYM finalist, Rob Burton (Saxophone) and pianist Christine Zerafa.

Amongst all this Sana also went off to London to do her Associateship diploma from Trinity College London (ATCL). She really enjoyed the process of it all, although it was a lot of work and preparation especially when you have so many instruments to deal with in Orchestral Percussion.

Sana and Shesh also attended a discussion panel after the concert and enjoyed watching the Chineke! Seniors perform their concert on the very same stage afterward. It was a very inspirational day for everyone involved and we all took Baroness Lawrence’s motto “live your best life every day” to heart.
