Essex Youth Orchestra

By Mariella Bromfield

I recently had the opportunity to join the Essex Youth Orchestra for the Easter residential and concert held at the Saffron Hall, playing percussion under the leadership of the great conductor Robin Browning. We had three good days of rehearsals with the concert on the Friday.

I enjoyed the atmosphere of learning amongst some new faces and to the long full days of rehearsing. The breaking down of the individual parts into the concentrated sectionals, to then come together again for the completed performance. The highlight for me was Playing Timpani in Iron Foundry, by Mossolov.

The second week the Essex Youth Symphonic Wind Orchestra met with Conductor Charles Hine. This was more heavily percussion orientated so I had the opportunity to play more instruments. Also playing a different repertoire.  My favourite piece was playing in the African drum section in West Side Story.
