In December 2018, a number Year 8 Germanists travelled to Germany to meet a group of German school pupils at the Bremen Christmas Market. We were delighted when these pupils told us that they were very keen to visit us here in Felsted.
Thanks to a number of Felsted families being willing to act as hosts, thirteen adventurous German pupils and their two internationally-minded teachers arrived at Felsted in March for a two night visit.
Reflecting on how much we all knew about each other’s cultures and what we wanted to learn over the few days, the Year 7 Germanists broke the ice. After that, our visitors enjoyed a flavour of academic learning at FPS, accompanying their hosts to two afternoon lessons. Before heading to their host families, they joined Year 8 Germanists to practise singing the 1983 Nena classic ‘99 Luftballons’ as well as ‘This is Me’ from ‘The Greatest Showman’.
On the second morning, the Bremen pupils were bubbling with praise for their host families. Excited about the prospect of a full day in England, they set off on a tour of Felsted School and village and then took part in a Quiz Club quiz. After experiencing the Andalusia Day assembly, they headed to Cambridge with a number of Year 8 Germanists. What a beautiful day, we all had to take part in a scavenger hunt and then glide along the Cambridge ‘Backs’ in a punt!
Culinary delights were in store on the next morning, when Year 7 teamed up with their German counterparts to create scones with jam and cream. The teamwork and organisation within the groups was outstanding. The visit concluded with a reflection by the visitors on what had been learned about our culture and traditions and was rounded off with a rousing rendition of ‘99 Luftballons’ and ‘This is Me’.
We hope that some life-long international friendships will now have begun.
