Shaping Tomorrow’s Learners, Today

Shaping Tomorrow’s Learners, Today

Our school ethos values and respects our long and varied history but we are also unafraid, indeed eager, to look ahead, with our pupils’ futures and best interests at the very core of our thinking.

An integral part of that thinking includes how we prepare our students for a world where technology sits at the forefront of almost every industry. Many of the jobs and careers our young people will one day experience do not yet exist; we aim to ensure that the educational experience we offer equips them not just with knowledge, but with a versatile mindset of flexibility, and transferable skills that will allow them to thrive whatever their path.

We continue to invest in our technology and innovation provision, and we are working to evolve our curriculum to embrace pupils’ futures. Our aim is to develop young people with strong employability skills, that are transferable and not siloed.  We want to develop in them skills such as analysis and problem‑solving, as well as collaboration, creativity, leadership and digital fluency - that will serve them well in any context.

This aligns closely with our commitment to developing character. As an internationally-focused, globally-minded school, our partnerships with both the IB and Round Square remain cornerstones of our ethos. Both the Round Square IDEALS and the IB Learner Profile encourage pupils to grow in competencies and aptitudes that are not tied to any single subject, but instead shape the kind of people they become: curious, compassionate, courageous, open-minded and ready to contribute to the world around them.

With this in mind, I am pleased to share that in the coming weeks we will commence consultation for medium-term transitioning to a fully Microsoft‑based digital model, moving away from our current Google setup. This decision would represent far more than just a change of platform; it would be a reaffirmation of our commitment to building a curriculum for our pupils which is the best it can be; a school that is forward‑looking, innovative and fully aligned with the digital landscape our pupils will inherit in the world they encounter beyond school.

There will be plenty more to share and discuss with you as this work commences and progresses, and we look forward to bringing our community with us every step of the way. For now, I hope you share our excitement for what this shift would enable: greater collaboration, excellent learning experiences, and a school environment that today prepares Felstedians to be leaders for tomorrow.

With best wishes
