Prep Head's Blog: Cultivating the Culture of Kindness

Our League Leaders and League Captains are continuing to lead our chapel services each Tuesday. This week, the Lorde Riche Team shared the story of the ‘Smartest Giant in Town’ written by Axel Scheffler and Julia Donaldson. The theme of selflessness was explored in depth and finished with a rather delightful demonstration of why thinking of others matters - particularly when trying to eat sweets and marshmallows!

Thinking of others is a core element of the kindness I witness on a daily basis between students, staff and parents. Our responsive non-uniform day is a small but significant part of the ethos we aim to nurture. Thank you to all our families for your support for today’s event.

I hope you agree that kindness needs to be practised on a daily basis in order for it to grow. We speak of how we can develop this during assemblies but more importantly, we aim to cultivate the culture of kindness in all areas of school life. During assembly today, we spoke about how we can improve our greetings to one another. Aspects such as eye contact and smiling as well as using names were key elements of this and a good opportunity to think about when and where we greet one another.

I would like to end this week by sharing some areas of thanks and I hope to build on this in weeks to come as there are many teams at Felsted who I would like to herald for their continued kindness and hard work.

Our catering team is always wonderful but their help and support with our recent shift to more healthy snacks has been outstanding. The children have greatly benefitted from regular meetings and sessions where they can be part of the planning process for menus and nutrition.

I would also like to thank our security and parking team, who have been out in all weathers over the winter months. Their continued support for helping us to keep traffic moving is much appreciated and I look forward to some brighter weather as we move forward into Spring.

I would like to thank our parents for helping us to develop kindness at Felsted and beyond. Whether it be in school, at drop off/pick up, during evening events and sporting events or even at the weekend shopping trip to the local supermarket. On that note, I do love saying hello to families who I bump into outside of school - even when buying groceries!

With warm wishes for the weekend ahead,

Miranda Norris,
