Prep Head's Blog: Shine the Light

I hope everyone has had a purposeful and enjoyable week - it has certainly been the case here in the Prep School with so many varied lessons and activities going on across all the phases.  We have also celebrated two Harvest Festivals and I am extremely grateful for your very generous donations to our very deserving causes.  It was inspiring to hear about how our resources are now used in the Ukraine to support so many underprivileged children. The value of service, which certainly holds so true at Felsted, shone through in the thanks that we received from UK Aid.

This followed on from my assembly this week in the Prep School which I entitled ‘Shine the Light’.  We listened to a song which had the lyrics ‘There’s a light in you, in everything that you do’.  The purpose of the assembly was to explore the idea that each of us has a light in us that we can allow to shine so that others can see it.  There’s a phrase, ‘It’s Lit’, which means that others can see that we are feeling alive and joyous, as if there's a light inside us that radiates warmth and light to others.  In the gospels, we read that ‘no one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden.  Instead, they put it on a stand, so that those who come in may see the light.’  In the Hindu faith, a greeting used towards others is the Hindi word ‘Namaste’, which translates as ‘the light in me honours the light in you’.

So, as we move towards the weekend, let us all take a moment to consider how we feel about the idea of having a light or spark within us.  Are we also aware of recognising and acknowledging the light in others?  What helps you to remember that we are all created as equal?...... and this should be celebrated.

Finally, in this week’s Newsletter I would like to draw your attention to our new Charter of Behaviour across the Prep School.  It has been put together, discussed and agreed by the pupils and reflects how we all want our children to behave and treat each other.  It has been adapted for each phase and there is a copy of each one within each Phase section of the Newsletter.  We want to ensure that kindness is right at the heart of what we do.

Have a good week.

Simon James
