Prep Headmaster’s Blog: The Power of Sleep

This week in the Prep School has been, as ever, a most purposeful and fruitful one. There has been lots of excellent work to observe and celebrate, as well as some hockey and rugby success, a pupil exchange to our partner school in Bremen and our well-being week. With this final element in mind, I thought I would let Mr Manley, our PSHE lead, recount the week and activities we have enjoyed - my thanks to him and his team of supporters including Ms Brown, Mrs Irvine-Scott and Mrs Short for their great energy in ensuring the whole Prep School community has had a very thought provoking time.

Our Wellbeing Week theme has centred around the importance of having a good night’s sleep. The quality of our sleep can affect both our physical and mental wellbeing and we shared some simple tips and tricks for making every snooze count in our Assembly on Tuesday! Every pupil has also been provided with their own sleep diary (downloadable here), so that they can have a go at monitoring how much they are getting.

Mindfulness bubbles at Felsted Prep

Our Headmaster’s Assembly also provided the perfect opportunity to re-launch our School RUBY code, the key message being that this code really helps to remind us all, as Felstedians, of the responsibility of care that we have for our own Wellbeing and also for those around us. It stands for:

  • Responsibility - making the right, safe and healthy choices.
  • Understanding - Showing care and respect for yourselves and others (empathy)
  • Being your very best - Giving nothing less than this.
  • Yourself - becoming and believing in yourself! You are Number 1!

Pupil Wellbeing continues to be at the very heart of our School ethos, and we have encouraged pupils to reflect upon this in our RUBY Surveys this week.

Breakfast & Mindfulness
On Tuesday morning, Miss Brown and Mrs Short put on a splendid Mindfulness & Breakfast session for our pupils and parents. It was wonderful to see so many people attend this and learn more about how the Mindfulness pathway is continuing to develop throughout the whole Felsted community. We were also able to take part in one of the key Mindful practices that our pupils are certainly familiar with: FOFBOC (Feet on Floor, Bottom on Chair).

There has been so much positive feedback from the Parents’ Mindfulness Class that is currently running. Here are some of the comments that have been made:

Mindfulness has helped me feel relaxed and content after a session.
Mindfulness has taught me to train myself to relax and be calm.
Mindfulness helps me feel calmer throughout the day.
It has helped calm my mind and refocus.
Mindfulness is really reassuring knowing other people think like you.
Meditation helps calm my mind and helps me focus.
We are so privileged to be able to have this important life-skill available, which continues to make such a valid contribution towards our whole-school wellbeing approach.

PSHE Coffee and Cake
A huge ‘thank you’ to all those who were able to attend our very first PSHE Coffee and Cake gathering. It was a great opportunity to share how the PSHE curriculum is continuing to develop throughout our School and we had some fascinating discussions about emotional wellbeing, body image and screen-time too.

A-Life Workshops
We also saw the return of our annual PSHE Healthy-living workshop (A-Life). As ever, this has brought much enthusiasm and energy from all those that have attended and this year we were fortunate to also be able to run a drug and alcohol awareness session for our Year 8's too.
