Prep Headmaster's Blog: The Art of Listening

Our focus this week in our Prep School assembly was to reflect upon the importance of listening – a skill which modern society may be losing sight of a little in this age of social media and the text conversation.

I showed the pupils the HMV logo – thankfully, quite a few of them recognised it as a HMV store still exists in Chelmsford. I asked them whether they knew what ‘HMV’ stood for (Answer: His Master's Voice).

In the years before the First World War, the company began producing recordings on large discs or gramophone records, each easily identified by the image of the central label. The image shows a dog listening to a recording played on an old, wind-up gramophone player. The recording is of his master’s voice – no wonder the dog looks curious and puzzled!

I then proceeded to show them a vinyl record, namely an original copy of the Beatles album ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’! The majority of pupils did recognise a Vinyl LP, thanks mainly to their recent revival.

Although technology and streaming has changed things, our ability to listen (and not just to music) is so vitally important. It helps us to learn, to keep us safe, it strengthens our friendships and can also make us one with the world around us. I ended the assembly with the question ‘How will listening enrich your learning, friendships and enjoyment of today?’ Something for us all to consider perhaps…

ISI Educational Quality Inspection

We are delighted to have received the highest grading, that of Excellent, for both the quality of pupils’ academic and other achievements, as well as the quality of the pupils’ personal development. We are naturally thrilled as a school for this accolade and I do hope you read the whole report in it’s entirety.

ISI Inspection Report 2019

I would like to thank the pupils, staff and parents, for their continued support of the school. Within the context of these excellent outcomes, there are a couple of recommendations which we will look to implement over the coming months to take the school forward even further.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Lisa Campbell and her wonderful Friends' of Felsted Team for organising last Saturday’s superb Spring Ball. The LRH was a picture and the evening was a wonderful celebration of friend raising. The singing waiter’s, the band and the DJ kept everyone entertained royally – a great night!
