Year 1 Kickstart Dinosaur Topic with Teach Rex Visit
Year 1 have had an incredibly exciting week as we kicked off our new Dinosaur topic, and what a memorable start it was! On Tuesday, Year 1 enjoyed a fantastic Dinosaur Day with the amazing Teach Rex team. The children were thrilled to meet Jam the T-Rex and had great fun playing games with him. There was lots of laughter as the children hid the chicken from Jam, crept past him while he was blindfolded, and even lay down on the floor to be “eaten” by him!

After this, the children took part in a very exciting workshop where they learned how to make their own green screen movies. They pretended to be chased by a dinosaur and impressed the Teach Rex team with their brilliant acting skills. Using green screen technology, the children then created their very own dinosaur movies.

The excitement continued when the children met the baby dinosaurs. They learned about different types of dinosaurs and showed great kindness by using gentle, reassuring words to help the nervous babies feel comfortable in our classroom. The children were able to tickle them under the chin, put their hands in their mouths, and even wipe dinosaur slobber on their teachers!

To finish the day, every child had a photograph taken with a baby pterodactyl on the green screen, which magically made it look like they were in a jungle. It was a truly wonderful day, and the Teach Rex team commented on how impressed they were with the children’s excellent listening skills and marvellous manners.

We followed up this incredible experience by writing recounts about our adventures. Having such a wonderful first-hand experience provided a fantastic stimulus for writing, and the children produced some detailed recounts. We will also be using our green screen movies to inspire story writing all about being chased by a dinosaur! We are so proud of Year 1 and can’t wait for more exciting learning as our dinosaur topic continues.
