Water Week in Felsted Prep

‘A drop of water is worth more than a sack of gold to a thirsty man.’

These were the parting words in this week’s Whole-School Assembly. It is a very striking quotation, which speaks volumes about how precious water is as a resource for us all. How often do we forget the vital part that water plays in our mental health, fitness, production and consumption?

In our PSHE sessions, pupils have been coming up with their top-tips on how to save water and Year 7 and 8 were specifically tasked with tracing ‘secret water’ - how water is used with the different parts of the global supply chain to create an end product: one that we use or arrives on our dinner tables! There were some fascinating examples of pupils tracing how water is used to make china cups, clothing and even a Chromebook!

This whole week has been about gaining perspective under the ‘Living in the Wider World’ theme - a core PSHE study area. Perhaps the simplest thing we can all remember to do (myself included!) is to turn that tap off whilst brushing our teeth. Doing so can save around 12-18 litres! If every adult in England and Wales remembered to do this, then that would be equivalent to supplying 500,000 homes with Electricity!

In Spanish our younger linguists have looked into the Importancia del Agua, coming up with some lovely ideas. Further up the school, pupils have discussed Como ahorrar el agua (how to save water), and Year 8 researched water availability and usage in the Hispanic World.

In English Ffrome Court pupils used the film ‘Luca’ to write a character description of the underwater creature. They were encouraged to use skills gained from the workshop with Catherine Emmettt to write a description of Luca using powerful adjectives and adverbs to describe his physical character as well as describing his personality and unusual traits.

In Maths, all Ffrome Court pupils embarked on a ‘Wicked Water Bill’s’ investigation which involved addition and data-handling skills. There were three levels of challenge, organised under the titles of different chillies - Gregory Green, Ole Orange, Ruthless Rufus! It was a pleasure to see great collaboration and teamwork from all of the pupils in this activity.

A great team effort from all of the Prep School this week. Well done.
