Senior Maths Challenge 2020

A few weeks ago many of our Felsted Sixth Form students took part in the annual Senior Maths Challenge.  This is a 90-minute, multiple-choice competition aimed at students across the UK.

It encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems. Whilst the challenge assumes no knowledge beyond the ordinary bounds of the syllabus, the problems on the challenge are often set in new or unusual contexts and are primarily designed to make students think.

More than 50 students across years 12 and 13 took part and nearly half of them were awarded a bronze, silver or gold certificate, a fantastic achievement.  The top performers in each year were Ruozhong in year 12 and Irvette in year 13, both of whom were awarded gold.  They performed well enough to qualify for the next round of competition, the Senior Kangaroo and we wish them every success with that.

Unfortunately with the current Covid-19 restrictions in place the team challenge competition has had to be cancelled this year.  We remain undeterred however and are already looking ahead to the 2021 competition!
