Scarlett Publishes First Fictional Book

Top IB Achiever Scarlett Walker-Hebborn has just published her first fictional book, ‘Wielders’, a detective novel with a fantasy element!

For Scarlett, who has always loved reading, writing a book has been a dream for a long time and she has been inspired by countless authors along the way. She started writing and planning the book during her time in lower sixth and throughout the next year and a half it gradually came together. Although the process has not always been easy, Scarlett has found it hugely enjoyable, especially throughout lockdown.

Scarlett decided to publish her book through Amazon, rather than find a literary agent, as this allowed her more control over the process, and she was able to reach her goal of publishing more quickly. She found a proof-reader through Felsted, but she was responsible for all other aspects, from editing and cover design, to marketing her work.

I know that I would not have been able to survive the process of publishing this book without the lessons that Felsted has taught me. It’s been a difficult process and I have learnt so much along the way, however Felsted has given me the determination that I needed to make it all the way to the end.

Wielders Synopsis:

Detective Deveraux was the best of the best. She had solved every mystery, locked up every criminal she had faced and was at the top of her game when she was handed the case of Alfie Osborne. The Osborne case has her seeking aid from the very people she despises, the Knoxes. The Knox gang, led by Camilla Knox and the rest of her family, is the most bloodthirsty gang in the city. Though the family itself seems to be above the law, Deveraux has put many of their lower ranking members away for a multitude of crimes. And yet, she can’t help but feel drawn towards the family, she feels as though she belongs with them more and more as the days go on and she gets a taste of life as a Knox. It’s not because of the money, the parties or even the power, it’s because of their abilities; the Knox family are all-powerful wielders. They have the rare ability to produce pure light, one of them has even killed using the power, something that is almost impossible to do and requires an incredible amount of strength. Though the family may possess an extremely strong power, Deveraux’s power is different: abnormal, uncontrollable. She wrestles with it whilst being sucked further into the family’s twisted game of lies and deception. The further in she goes, the less she wants to leave, she no longer turns away from the brutality, but rather partakes in it with a wicked smile. The violence gives her life, the pain she causes fuels her – they say the brightest spirits fall the furthest…

It is said that the light a wielder produces reflects their path. Deveraux’s light, once the colour of young stars, morphs into an inky black, dark enough to blot out the sun.

Is redemption possible when you’ve fallen so far?

Is redemption even worth the bother when being the villain is just so much fun?
