Mother Tongue Other Tongue Poetry Competition
Congratulations to Felsted’s Ayla A and Emma P-S (Year 8) who have been shortlisted for the Routes into Languages - Mother Tongue Other Tongue Poetry Competition.
The Celebration Event will take place at Murray Edwards College, University of Cambridge, and will include a Poetry Slam, led by Slam Poetry Champion, Joelle Taylor, who'll also be performing her own poetry and presenting the trophies to the winners.
Routes into Languages invites young writers to send in their poetry and verse for this multi-lingual poetry competition. There are two categories:
Mother Tongue – pupils whose first language is not English are encouraged to submit a poem or song in their first language.
Other Tongue – pupils learning another language are encouraged to get creative with this language and submit an original poem for the competition.
Ayla chose a poem in Urdu (her mother tongue) and Emma wrote a poem in Spanish, which they also had to translate into English and write about why their poem was important to them.
Their poems will feature in the Mother Tongue Other Tongue anthology as part of the Cambridge Festival of Ideas, helping to raise the profile of languages on the official Festival of Ideas 2019 website.
