Medical Society under Remote Learning

Pupils from Year 9 to U6 who have an interest in careers in Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science and associated professions are all welcome to join Felsted Medical Society (MedSoc).

MedSoc members, located all around the world, have continued to engage with a variety of activities and are also regularly updated on enrichment opportunities and developments in Higher Education, not only in the UK but also Europe and The States. Modules have included  ‘Problem Based Learning’ and ‘Ethics’ with a focus not surprisingly on COVID-19.

Support from Old Felstedians including Chloe G, Shola A and Maddie W has been much appreciated. Chloe attended a google meet to inform members about reading Neuroscience at university and life in general at Leeds, where she has just finished her first year. She also gave very helpful advice on UCAT preparation as she had scored highly. Shola provided lots of very detailed information about reading Medicine at Edinburgh. They both seem to be enjoying their courses very much. Maddie kindly produced a FelsTED talk. She is just entering her 4th year as a Medical student at St George's, London and set up MedSoc, initially as a pupil run initiative. Her talk was very informative and in particular gave valuable advice on preparing a strong application. The importance of supra-curricular, such as MOOCs, volunteering and work experience was emphasised. In the current situation virtual work experience is being offered as the ability to reflect and learn from the experience is still applicable. Some L6 members are attending the ‘Medicine in Action’ Conference which promises to have some excellent speakers.

As well as developing skills for UCAT over the summer, the L6 will be undertaking BMAT preparation which is the pre interview assessment for Medicine at Oxford, to which all 5 intend to apply.

Elliott S rounded off the term as quiz master for Kahoot, ably assisted by Holly as vet specialist. Congratulations to Milly with the winning score. Elliott also updated us that he has been awarded a music scholarship alongside the conditional offer to read Medicine at UEA- great news! Thanks go to both Elliott and David T as outgoing presidents of MedSoc and all those who have supported MedSoc 2019-2020.
