Land Rover 4x4 Schools Tech Challenge

Felsted Prep School pupils are through to the National Final of the Land Rover 4x4 in schools technology challenge after impressing judges with their radio-controlled car.

The challenge was to design and build a radio-controlled 4 wheel drive vehicle which had to successfully navigate and complete obstacles on an off-road test track.

‘Team Boulderdash’ made up of six budding Felsted engineers in Year 8, won the Team Showroom Award and the Best Engineered Car Award, putting them through to the National Finals held in March. Each team member had a different role, showing skills in designing, programming, coding, engineering, building and maintaining their model as well as media managing their project to try and secure sponsors.

Head of Design, Technology and Engineering Mr William Harding comments; “The competition has allowed us to present pupils with opportunities to develop their creative thinking and project management skills. The ability to anticipate and identify real world problems is vital in the 21st century world we now live in and we actively encourage our pupils to think critically about problems and collaborate with others to bring ideas to life.”

Felsted is committed to engaging pupils with Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics subjects from the youngest years and the Prep School currently holds a Gold Quality Mark for Science. Felsted pupils have reached the Big Bang Science and Engineering National Finals for seven years, winning many National awards for their entries.
