Joining Windsor's U6 Boys' House

by Miss L Keable, new Assistant HM of Windsor's

It’s been a whirlwind of a half term in Windsor’s with lots of Sport, Drama and Prefect selection so far this term. The students have fully submerged themselves back into school life and have started to evolve themselves into the legacy they want to leave at Felsted.

This academic school year, I am fortunate to be the new Assistant Housemistress of Windsor’s, Yes you read that right a female AHM in a male boarding house. It’s a first in the senior boys house and it is a legacy I am proud to be a part of.

On reflection of the first half term, I have been blown away by how welcoming and accepting Year 13 boys are to a Female AHM. I was slightly apprehensive about starting and was worried that the boys might not be as on board as I would have hoped, but they eliminated my worries and have fully embraced the modern take on house staff.

I’ve enjoyed the challenge of swapping Junior House Girls for the Senior House Boys. It’s opened my eyes to the world of boys and their mindset towards boarding. They both come with their own unique challenges; boys are definitely more prone to breaking things - including themselves and It’s interesting to see how they approach house life. But overall I have really enjoyed the change of pace and new challenges a boy's house has brought.

Many have started to learn new life skills in house,  including how to work a washing machine or an oven. With these new skills in mind, I recently helped my tutor group prepare and cook a 9 O’clock feed for the house - Chilli con carne, and it went down a treat!

I am looking forward to the next 8 months in Windsor’s, where I will be supporting the students through their remaining terms at Felsted, the stress of exams and helping them with their preparation for university.
