Georgraphy Field Trip to North Norfolk

by Lois P (Year 10)

The Year 10 GCSE geographers went to North Norfolk to study the topics of Rivers and Coasts. On Sunday we went to Holkham beach to study the formations of dunes. After two hours of quality field work understanding sampling techniques, sand dunes succession and the vital role of marram grass we headed to Morston Quay to take the boat out to see the Blakeney estuary, spit and the seals. The sun shone on us but the wind meant that many of us got quite wet! After dinner it was time for a competition! We were split into our House groups and completed geographical games such as, Pictionary and charades describing geography terms and Mrs Stringer’s Alphabet Geography quiz. The joint winners were Follies and Elwyn's.

On Monday morning we completed a town study in Sheringham where we concluded that it was a commercial town but we were pleasantly surprised that all the artisanal independent businesses were still there. We also had time to study the coastal defences that are protecting the town. The second activity was studying a river’s profile. We donned our wellies and our waterproofs and jumped straight into the measuring of the River Glaven. We learnt how to take accurate readings of river width, depth, velocity and pebble size and roundness to help us to understand how these variables change downstream. All of this work will help us to understand the physical processes of rivers and coasts better and it has taught us some of the necessary fieldwork skills for our GCSE. A massive thank you to all of the members of staff who accompanied us and an enormous thank you to Mrs Stringer who organised the whole trip.
