Felsted’s Jake Pursues Career in Merchant Navy

Felsted’s Jake Pursues Career in Merchant Navy

Jake M in the U6 has had to take steps to secure his future, with COVID 19 affecting his initial plans. Jake applied to the Merchant Navy, a long process which involved researching if a company recruits its own cadets or uses a training provider.

Only Carnival UK and Princess Cruises recruit their own and all other companies go through training providers such as Clyde Marine, Chiltern Maritime or SSTG. He applied to every company and training provider and received an offer to work for Norwegian Cruise Line in Southampton as a Deck Cadet, which is the lowest ranked Navigational Officer; however he accepted a role with Italian cruise line MSC as a Cadet Deck Officer, studying in Newcastle, with the option to transfer to super yachts in 7 years when he fully qualifies as a Captain.

Due to the current financial impact of COVID19 that the cruise industry is experiencing, he decided it would be wise to apply for some universities as a back-up if the contract falls through. He had researched US universities already and decided to apply to Penn State in Pennsylvania, University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) and the University of Alabama. Offers are pending and should be received within the next month.
