Felsted Pupils Reach National Spelling Bee Finals

Two Felsted Prep School pupils are through to the National Final of the Year 7 Foreign Language Spelling Bee, a competition arranged by Government supported organisation, Routes into Language.

Michaela Holmes came second in the regional finals and Spencer Taker came fourth. They both earned a place at the National Finals, which will be held at Oxford University in July.

All participants had to learn 50 German words per round, which they were required to translate from English during a 60 second countdown. By the time they get to the Nationals they will have learned a total of 200 words each.

The whole experience was a lot of fun. It was impressive to listen to others pupils spelling words in German, French and Spanish at great speed. It has been really enjoyable to learn the 150 words and to try to spell them out loud, as fast as we can.

Felsted Modern Foreign Languages department was recently accredited with the Silver Primary Languages Quality Mark. All pupils learn Spanish from age four at Felsted, with pupils from Year 7 onwards able to learn two languages from Spanish, French, German and Latin.
