Felsted Achieves Record International Baccalaureate Diploma Results

Felsted is delighted to announce our best ever IB Diploma Programme results in 2018.  This year Felsted once again achieved a 100% pass rate and improved our average point score to 35.5 out of a possible 45, 5.5 points above the world average. This result is equivalent to an average score of 2 A*s and an A grade at A Level (based on the UCAS Tariff) and shows how well pupils have performed in these demanding examinations, based on an absolute world standard.

In all subjects, over 85% of results were graded at 5 points or above (the maximum is 7) and 61% of all results were graded at 6 points or above (seen as the equivalent of an A grade at A Level). Five students achieved scores of over 40 points which puts each of them in the top 6% worldwide.

Imogen Gander achieved 43 points and met her offer to read Classics at Girton College, Cambridge. Imogen, who has ambitions to be a Barrister after university, was an academic and music scholar at Felsted, and has been involved in every area of school life, including being involved in Model United Nations events and playing netball. Imogen also made her acting debut as Cosette in Felsted’s production of Les Misérables last year, having shown a great passion for music and singing throughout her time at both the Prep and Senior School. However, what makes her achievement even more commendable is that Imogen is still only 17, having studied above her natural year group since she joined Felsted.

I have loved taking part in the IB Diploma over the last two years. Not only has it allowed me to carry on with many of the subjects that I love, but it has enable me to build strong friendships with those from across the world, as we navigated a challenging, but rewarding programme.

Jana Stredanska and Bethan Hudson-Lund also achieved a world class 43 points.

Jana, a full boarder from Slovakia, will go on to study Management and Spanish at King’s College London. A school prefect, Jana balanced her studies with a love of athletics, having previously won bronze in the Slovak High Jumping National Championships in 2015. Since joining Felsted she has also developed her public speaking skills in several competitions, as well as taking part in Felsted’s Model United Nations Conference.

Meanwhile, Bethan will go on to read Biological Sciences at Durham. An academic and music scholar, Bethan balanced her final year of studies with a lead role in Felsted’s production of Les Misérables School Edition, wowing everybody with her performance as Eponine.

Anna Kloos, a full boarder from Germany, achieved a superb 41 points, achieving her offer to study Architecture at Manchester University. Remarkably, Anna is still only 16 years old, another top achiever to be studying a year above her natural year group at Felsted. During her final year of study, Anna joined many of her fellow Felstedians on a life changing trip to the Magic Bus Centre in Mumbai, one of Felsted’s charity partners, making a difference to the lives of street children during her time there.

Camilla Marzi, a full boarder from Italy, achieved 40 points and will study Law at Bristol. During her time at Felsted, Camilla entered into all areas of school life, including debating at the Felsted Model United Nations Conference. Reflecting on her time completing the IB Diploma Programme she said: ‘While completing the Diploma I learnt that challenging yourself is essential to grow and develop as a person. I really enjoyed my two years at Felsted and I am especially glad to have been able to choose challenging subjects and not easy options. This forced me to go beyond my comfort zone and develop new abilities’.

Deputy Head Girl, Ella-Rae Coleby, achieved 39 points to read Philosophy at Durham. An Academic Scholar, Ella-Rae fully embraced Felsted life, taking part in sports fixtures, being on the charity team and chairing the Felsted 2017 Model United Nations Conference. 

One of Felsted’s highest scoring boys was Jan-Felix Heymann, a full boarder from Hamburg, who achieved 36 points to study Economics at the University of Amsterdam. Jan-Felix involved himself in Model United Nations events at Felsted, won the school Chess Competition this year and also played for the 2nd XI football team.

“This is an outstanding set of results from a superb group of students.  The IB is a very demanding, but hugely rewarding course that encourages those that study it to become academically inquisitive, socially aware, and globally literate.  Thanks to these results, the students are well prepared for highly successful university careers.
