Author Abi Daré Visits Felsted

On 17 June, we were privileged enough to meet the incredible author of The Girl With The Louding Voice, Abi Daré.
 

She spoke to us about her ideas and setbacks when writing the book, giving us advice on our creative writing techniques and explaining how to craft characters for a novel. Abi told us all about how she wanted to raise awareness for the abuse happening towards girls in Nigeria and how many of them do not have access to an education. Her talk was inspirational and we were lucky enough to get the chance to ask Abi to sign a copy of her book.

At lunch Abi Daré recited the first chapter of ‘The Girl with the Louding Voice’ using the voice she called the ‘Adunni voice’, which perfectly reflected the protagonist. We then had the opportunity for her to read a piece of our creative writing coursework and she gave us tips on how to improve, such as by thinking about the greater picture and rather than fixating on the description of a singular object.

All in all, we were left inspired by a hugely talented writer and also went away with practical tips to implement into our own writing.
