'Welcome' from our Secretary Generals this year, Jack Tristani and Dominic Wells
Dear Delegates, Advisers and Participants,
As Secretary Generals this year we would both like to welcome you to the 11th Annual Inter-School Model United Nations Conference, hosted by Felsted School. Whether you are an experienced MUN delegate, or this is your first time taking to the podium, we hope you will both enjoy and learn from this weekend’s events.
This decade, perhaps more than any other, has been a decade of change; change often facilitated by the youngest in society. We have witnessed Malala championing women’s and children’s rights, and Emma Gonsález advocating social reforms in the United States. It was this decade that Jack Andraka developed a new way to detect pancreatic cancer and Amariyanna Copeny fought for clean water in Flint. Our generation has proved time and time again that we will rise, no matter the challenge.
There is, however, no greater task to which we must apply ourselves than that of the pursuit of a climate solution. It is to this topic that we dedicate this year’s conference: to the protection and salvation of the environment. In November 2019, 2.8 million people were affected, and 280 killed, by flooding in Eastern Africa alone. In the United States, the Flint Water Crisis still continues to affect and damage communities across the Flint area. In Australia, it is estimated that over a billion animals may have perished in the fires, the smoke of which threatens to perpetuate the cyclical nature of climate damage. The central topic of this year’s conference, therefore, is ‘Climate Action’: the thirteenth of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
We are to be United Nations; united not by language, by customs, or by blood, but by a common goal; the happiness and dignity of humankind. Whether you are a member of the security council, environment, health, human rights or the economic and social committees, we urge you to seek out solutions that are beneficial to all, as far as is possible, in the spirit of international cooperation and friendship.
For both of us, Model United Nations has been an integral part of our school lives. We have each been involved in Model United Nations conferences in a variety of capacities at school, interschool and international levels. We are thus well aware of the difficulties and complexities associated with the intricacies and protocols of Model United Nations conferences.
We have, of course, been working towards creating a convivial and understanding atmosphere in which the conference shall progress. If, however, you have any particular concerns, we are both available to answer any questions or address any concerns and will be circulating through the conference to deal with any queries that you may have.
We look forward to welcoming you to the Felsted Model United Nations 2020.
