Why Study in the English Countryside
Many city-dwelling parents choose to send their children to boarding schools in the countryside, but what are the benefits of rural campus life? Gemma Kilby, Head of Admissions at Felsted School explains the educational advantages of Felsted’s scenic location.
Our pupils are never sitting down for long. With 90 acres of beautiful East Anglian countryside surrounding our school buildings and stunning views from every window, no wonder they can’t wait to get outside and stretch their legs.
This is particularly appealing for our pupils who board with us during the week and return to their homes in the city at the weekends. Whether they come from London or Cambridge – both an hour away from Felsted – or perhaps a further flung city elsewhere in the world, there is no doubt that there are many benefits of a rural education.
The first thing our urban students notice when they arrive is that the school campus is very green and extremely quiet and safe. The short walk between school buildings from one lesson to another gives an uplifting experience of being in nature and provides an exceptionally peaceful study environment.
Our campus is a mixture of natural areas where our students are welcome to wander, and extensive playing fields as far as the eye can see. Studying in the countryside brings with it the chance to get outside and be active and safe during the school day and team sports are popular at Felsted.
English boarding schools usually offer boarding from the age of eight, but many parents consider 11 or 13 to be the best age for boarding school and choose it because they believe independent boarding school provides opportunities for pupils to discover their own talents and interests, and develop independence and confidence.
England is often thought to have the best boarding schools, thanks to centuries of experience of boarding education. Although no one county has the very best boarding schools – it very much depends on the convenience of the location and whether the character of the school suits your child – English countryside boarding schools offer a breath of fresh air for city children and plenty of space to grow.
