British Boarding Schools: A Top Choice for German Students
Parents worldwide aspire to give their children a British boarding school education, and German students are particularly drawn to this unique experience. Gemma Kilby, Head of Admissions at Felsted, one of the UK’s oldest boarding schools, explains the appeal.
Around a fifth of the students aged 13 to 18 at Felsted – an award winning independent boarding and day school for around a thousand girls and boys set in the beautiful English countryside - are from families who do not live in the UK. This creates a wonderful, international buzz around the place that is great preparation for global life of the future. While Felsted welcomes students from places as far afield as China, South America, the US and across Africa, there are families from several countries in Europe that are often drawn to our 460 years of history and Germany is certainly one of them.
So, what makes Felsted irresistible to German families?
First, it has to be the academic programme. A mix of traditional and new methods of teaching inspire and encourage students to apply themselves to their studies and achieve impressive results. Many schools – including Felsted – offer internationally recognised qualifications such as the rigorous International Baccalaureate Diploma, which open the door to the world’s finest universities. Many German students at Felsted over the years have excelled academically and secured places that have set them up for enviable careers.
But school is not just about lessons. Sport and the arts are a very important part of a British boarding school education, and the termly calendar at Felsted is full of competitive fixtures, theatrical productions and concerts. Students are encouraged to involve themselves in charity, community and service initiatives too.
Where is Felsted?
English language skills are highly prized, and British culture is a constant source of fascination. Felsted is idyllically situated in a pretty English village, just an hour’s journey from both London and Cambridge. Our students love visiting these historic cities with their world-class museums and art galleries and this location means that Felsted is very easy to get to by road, rail and air - London Stansted Airport is just 20km away, while London City Airport is about 60km.
Felsted staff arrange transport to help students return to their home countries for the holidays, but many choose to stay at school for the shorter breaks, to make the most of the school’s facilities and soak up the atmosphere in the boarding houses. These are comfortable and homely, and staffed by caring professionals. Every detail is taken care of - whether arranging a visa, calling home, monitoring academic progress or encouraging students to make the most of all the opportunities on offer.
It’s no surprise then that British boarding schools remain a favourite with families from Germany and all around the world.
