A Home Away From Home: How Felsted Creates a Welcoming Boarding Environment for London Students

London parents often want their children to benefit from an all-round education in a peaceful, rural location, away from the hustle and bustle of the city and with plenty of space to grow. They find a welcoming boarding school environment at Felsted School, just an hour away from the busy capital, explains Elliott Grant, Housemaster at the award winning boarding school.

Felsted was named ‘Boarding School of the Year 2023’ by the prestigious Times Educational Supplement and it’s easy to see why. Not only does the boarding school near London present 90 acres for your children to explore, but this is the setting for an education that is exciting and inspiring, which embraces modern teaching methods and technology while celebrating the traditions of our 460-year history too.

Weekly boarding is extremely popular at Felsted, particularly with London families. Our strong boarding school community, with a focus on boarding school student wellbeing, creates a family-like atmosphere, which gives pupils the support they need to happily immerse themselves in their education during the week. At weekends they travel home to the city to spend quality time with their parents, without the pressure of homework to worry about. The perfect balance!

As well as a world-class academic education, boarders at Felsted really make the most of the high-quality provision for sport and the arts at the school, and throw themselves into the huge choice of clubs and activities on offer too. Felsted has one of the longest-established Combined Cadet Force contingents in the UK, and this – along with the very successful Duke of Edinburgh Bronze, Silver and Gold programmes and many partnerships offering volunteering opportunities for charities around the world – means young people learn the true meaning of service.

They also develop the skills of communication, team-working and leadership, which will shape them as they develop into adulthood and prepare them for success in their future lives and careers.

Of course, the vast majority of UK boarding schools are independent, fee-charging schools, and Felsted is no exception. Felsted offers a welcoming boarding school environment for London children – they are well cared for by experienced staff, stay in comfortable on-campus boarding houses and are supported to focus on their studies while enjoying their interests and developing lifelong skills. All in the fresh air!
