Community Outreach
Community Service
Supporting the Local Community
Felsted pupils are encouraged to give their own time and commitment to support projects in the local community as well as within the school community and the school aims to support the village and local community whenever possible.
Examples of this include:
- Sharing facilities with local schools and businesses
- Inviting members of the village to school productions and music events
- The Felsted Almshouses - managed by Felsted School as part of the legacy of the school's founder Richard Lord Riche, our younger Felstedians deliver Harvest food parcels and other support to Almshouse residents
- Our musicians perform at local churches, village fetes and community events
Volunteering
There are plenty of opportunities for all Felstedians to get involved in volunteering for our community. Pupils of all ages are committed to caring for the local village with regular litter picks organised by our Sustainability Committee.
A large number of the Senior School participate in weekly volunteer work as a co-curricular activity built into the school day. This includes conservation work around the village, helping in local primary schools and nurseries, visiting residential and care homes for the elderly, helping in a special educational needs school, sorting and packing supplies for UK Aid, volunteering in local charity shops and taking part in the community Speedwatch programme.
Education Outreach
Sharing our expertise and our facilities with others helps raise the standard of education for all. In a society that is looking increasingly divided, we want to do much more to build equity, foster talent, and transform individual life chances.
Throughout the academic year and during the school holidays, Felsted welcomes pupils from other schools to take part in academic and co-curricular programmes on our campus that bring a new dimension to their learning, and our highly qualified staff members and committed senior pupils also go out to other schools to run sessions for their pupils there.
Examples include:
- Dedicated subject experience days for local primary school children such as Science and Classics
- Sports masterclasses and tournaments that are open to children in the local area
- Music workshops at local primary schools run by our Senior School musicians
- Felsted’s popular annual Model United Nations Conferences bring together young people from schools in the UK and abroad to debate and discuss global issues
- Providing teaching expertise, facility provision, and drama production invitations to local primary schools
We are in a fortunate position to offer financial assistance in the form of bursaries to help many young people to attend our school who would otherwise be unable to. The impact of Felsted’s outreach is often life-changing.
- The school provides fee assistance to more than 250 pupils at a cost of about £3m per annum, 13% of the school’s gross fee income
- More than £889,000 a year is devoted to providing means-tested bursary support for pupils
- We work with our partners at Royal Docks Academy (based in Newham, adjacent to the Felsted Mission) and the Royal National Children’s Springboard Foundation to bring several young people per year to Felsted for Sixth Form on fully-funded boarding places
- Felsted Governors are seeking to develop various methods of providing means-tested financial support to pupils in future, which do not depend entirely on fee income
- Generous benefactors support a number of Felsted pupils
Partnership with Royal Docks Academy
For over a hundred years, the links between The Ascension Church and the Felsted School Mission in the East End of London have continued to grow and develop.
The Ascension Church works with the local community providing youth activities, promoting fitness and social interaction.
Community Partnerships
Felsted is committed to building links with partners to share resources, facilities and educational opportunities.
Saracens Rugby
Felsted is as an Official Partner School of Saracens Rugby Club, with the two organisations working together to identify talented young players and nurture them on the path towards a career in professional rugby.
Felsted provides use of facilities for Saracens’ training sessions and academy camps during the school holidays, and assessment festivals at which new talent will be identified by both the club and the school.
The partnership also gives the opportunity for one Saracens Academy player each year to receive a scholarship to Felsted School. In addition, Felsted coaches will have access to Saracens Academy coaches for specialist coaching support and workshops.
Sunrisers Cricket & MCC Hub
Felsted School is an official performance hub for Sunrisers Cricket, one of eight top teams in the women’s domestic game, to support the development of women's cricket in the East of England.
The school’s extensive indoor and outdoor cricket facilities help to develop the skills of talented young sportswomen on the Sunrisers’ Emerging Players programme.
Felsted is also an MCC performance hub for regional women’s cricket which provides free, professional coaching to talented athletes from state secondary schools across the country.
