Felsted recognises the important connection between a healthy diet and the ability to learn effectively and achieve high standards in all areas of school life.

It is a crucial factor for every child’s wellbeing that a healthy, high quality and well balanced diet is provided for them and Felsted is fully committed to providing that.

All our food is made on-site with dedicated chefs employed by the school. They are inspected by the Food Standards Agency and have the top 5 star rating.

Felsted Catering aims to:

  • Use locally grown, environmentally sustainable food wherever possible.
  • Use as much fresh food as possible.
  • Link our menus to seasonal produce.
  • Support ethical buying.
  • Make as much use of organic, natural food products and fair trade produce as possible, and to eliminate genetically modified food and potentially harmful food additives.
  • Ensure that our suppliers, both local and national, are committed to providing best quality and value, with the highest standards of accredited health and safety. We expect them to have procedures covering full traceability of source through the supply chain, with comprehensive food-labelling, supplying information on both allergens and nutritional data.

Our daily offering

The Board of Governors recognises the important connection between a healthy diet and a student’s ability to learn effectively and achieve high standards in the School. The School believes in providing pupils and staff with high quality healthy foods, and also recognises that individuals must have a varied choice of healthy meals available to them.

Special Diets

Felsted expects all pupils to eat the school meals provided, but is able to meet individual requirements on medical grounds. All food which might contain nuts or traces of nuts is clearly labelled. Parents of children who have allergies to any food product, or who have special dietary requirements, are asked to make this clear in the medical questionnaire that they complete when their child enters the School.  They should also inform the School at once if their son or daughter subsequently develops an intolerance of any food.

The School Nurse and Catering Managers are happy to see any parent who has concerns about their child's medical condition, and to devise a special menu, where practically possible.

Coffee Shop & Snacks

Felsted Senior School have an on site coffee shop, where Safi coffee is served. A full range of drinks and snacks can be purchased. Boarders are also able to visit the village shop in break times with permission (Prep boarders on set days) to stock up on any provisions. Takeaways are also allowed to be delivered on certain evenings for different year group boarding pupils, as children get older and take more responsibility for their diet.

Pupil and Parent Catering Committee

A parent and student committee provide valuable input into the provision of school food and meet regularly. If you are interested in being involved please contact caterer@felsted.org.

Latest News

In February we had our first newsletter 'quick survey' on the proposal to hold a meat free lunch every third Tuesday in school.  The suggestion of 'meat free lunch' was put forward by the pupil body, via the Food Committee, and after it was clear that this was a controversial proposal, it was put to a vote among the pupils and staff. The outcome of this referendum was 415 in favour, with 275 against, and 120 abstentions. The purpose of this is not to drive people away from the consumption of meat, but to recognise that there is a global challenge about sustainability that needs to be addressed.
