Felsted pupils are fortunate to have wonderful facilities and specialist teachers to study art as part of the curriculum, a co-curricular activity or as a hobby.

All forms of art are studied, from still life drawings and paintings to ceramics and textiles, with help always on hand from an experienced and talented Art Department.

Art Scholarships and Awards are available at Year 7, 9 and 12, offering talented artists the opportunity to work with our department to nurture and develop their talents.

The Art room was the most homely place for me and I would paint over a lot of weekends. I never expected art to be my profession, though the experience and support I received in the Art Department made it clear to me it was a hobby I did not want to give up. Felsted gives one the feeling that anything in the world is possible.

Curriculum Art

Early Years & Key Stage 1 (Ages 4-7)

Reception - Year 2

Pupils are taught by specialist art teachers, developing a range of artistic skills through projects related to their topic work. A range of artists, such as Monet and Renoir, are investigated to provide context for pupil’s work.

Children also explore a variety of materials and visiting artists provide children with the opportunity to work on projects collectively, experiencing a variety of artistic techniques and materials e.g. mosaic work.

Key Stage 2 (Ages 7-11)

Pupils are taught by specialist art teachers within our wonderfully inspiring, purpose built art room.

Years 3 & 4

Children experience a range of 2D and 3D projects to develop their skills individually and as a team. Personal expression and creativity is actively encouraged and a range of art activities are offered throughout the year. Artwork is displayed and celebrated in each classroom.

Years 5 & 6

Two art activities are offered every week to encourage individual creativity and development of self- initiated projects. Different techniques are taught and developed through self-evaluation and group critique.

Those showing talent are invited to apply for Scholarships and Awards into Year 7 to celebrate excellence in art.

Key Stage 3 (Ages 11-14)

Art Scholarships and Awards are available at Year 7 and Year 9 entry

Years 7 & 8

Pupils continue to be taught by specialist art teachers within our wonderfully inspiring, purpose built art room.

Projects now become more complex with a greater emphasis on research, analysis and art history. Self-expression and creativity is actively encouraged through the development and evaluation of ideas, and class discussion. Expressive and creative solutions are encouraged.

Art activities are available twice a week providing pupils with the opportunity to develop drawing and painting skills, to investigate artists and to develop self-initiated projects.

Pupils lead whole school projects using art to celebrate cultural diversity, creativity, music, drama and social responsibility, working individually and as part of a team.

A variety of artistic techniques are taught and developed through self-evaluation and group critique, with artwork displayed and celebrated throughout the school.

Year 9

Pupils continue to be taught by specialist art teachers within our wonderfully inspiring, purpose built Senior School art rooms.

Self-expression and creativity is actively encouraged through the development and evaluation of ideas, and class discussion. Expressive and creative solutions are encouraged.

There are many opportunities throughout the school week for any student with a special interest in art to attend extra art activity sessions.

GCSE (Ages 14-16)

Years 10 & 11

Art can be studied at GCSE and more information on the course can be found in our GCSE subject guide linked below.

Annual trips to galleries are organised for all those studying Art, to reinforce the contextual and historical component of the courses.

There are many opportunities throughout the school week for any student with a special interest in art to attend extra art activity sessions.

Work is regularly displayed in various exhibition sites within the school and at local venues; playing a key role in publicly demonstrating the Felsted ethos of outstanding teaching, learning and achievement.

Sixth Form (Ages 16-18)

Art Scholarships and Awards are available for Year 12 entry.

Years 12 & 13

Art can be studied at A Level and as part of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.

There are many opportunities throughout the school week for any student with a special interest in art to attend extra art activity sessions. A weekly life drawing class is also available for Sixth Form students.

Trips to London galleries are organised at least once a year for all students formally studying art, to reinforce the contextual and historical component of the courses.

Work is regularly displayed in various exhibition sites within the school and at local venues; playing a key role in publicly demonstrating the Felsted ethos of outstanding teaching, learning and achievement.

Felsted has a proven track record in preparing a large percentage of students to successfully access and complete courses in Fine Art, Architecture, and Fashion and Design at many of the prestigious schools of art and top universities.
