Felsted MUN 2018

Felsted’s ninth Model United Nations (MUN) Conference will take place between Sunday 25 and Monday 26 February 2018.

Welcome from Secretary-General

Dear Delegates and Advisers,

I would like to extend my personal thanks for choosing to join us at the Felsted Model United Nations conference in February. Whether this is your first time picking up a placard or you are a seasoned veteran of the MUN circuit, we are very much looking forward to welcoming you to our school soon. Our team have been working hard to organise the conference and provide you with materials to make the structure of the debates and their content more accessible; these will be with you shortly.

The theme of the conference is “Empowering women and girls to achieve global equality.” The emancipation of women is a movement that has gained a lot of traction in international media, and lots of positive work has certainly been done to reduce the gulf that exists between men and women. However it is easy to become complacent, to believe that the problem is solved because it is not explicitly obvious in our society. However recent revelations in the press have demonstrated how issues relating to gender still pervade every echelon of our society, at home they have simply become less public.

However through MUN we are striving for a more international outlook, thus we must remain conscious of the fact that the global state of gender equality still has a long way to go. Progress is being made in small part such as in Saudi Arabia with the institution of the right of women to drive. Yet there are still numerous and grave issues which plague the global community with regards to gender equity. Cultural issues such as FGM, widow cleansing and disparities in opportunities and remuneration in the workplace still plague the global community yet through this conference we hope that delegates will become more aware of, and be able to engage with these issues that cannot go unsolved. I have every faith that our debate chambers will yield innovative solutions and I look forward to finding out how you tackle these.

I understand that taking part in a conference can be daunting, particularly if it is your first time. Please rest assured that we were all there once and will do all that we can to ensure that you have all the information you need to prepare and get the most of what we hope will be an enjoyable and worthwhile two days. If you have any questions then please do not hesitate to contact me (hraffan@felsted.org), no question is too big or too small. I look forward to hearing from you and seeing you in February.

Yours sincerely,

Harry Raffan
