Felsted Bake Off 2022

Our talented bakers arrived at the final of the Felsted Bake Off 2022 armed with bags of decorations (including about a hundred bags of mini eggs!!) ready to bake this year’s challenge - a three layer cake, with participants free to choose the flavour and decoration.

Our 2022 finalists were Charlotte P & Georgia F of Thorne, Dennis K & Daniel D of Gepp’s, Ben L & Daniel S of Deacon’s and Emily T & Sheneil C of Garnetts.

Thorne got off to a flying start and got their cakes in the oven first. There was a dash back to house for more cocoa powder for Garnetts girls, and even a run to the shop for more cream cheese, when the first lot of icing went wrong for Deacon’s. We had the Marketing team on hand to capture all the action, and visitors from houses popped in to show their support throughout the evening.

It was a tough challenge, really stretching the bakers’ skills and the 2 hour baking time was increased to relieve the pressure on some! The participants showed excellent teamwork and ingenuity and are to be highly commended for their commitment, creativity and perseverance.

The cakes looked fantastic and the results were as follow - 4th place - Garnetts with their triple chocolate cake covered in mini eggs, 3rd place Gepp’s with their red velvet cake in the colours of the Ukraine flag, 2nd place Deacon’s, also a red velvet cake with the addition of strawberries and sugar roses and in 1st place Thorne with their biscoff and strawberry cake. They were presented with a Bake Off recipe book each, and winning aprons. The runners up received an Easter egg.

The judges - Mrs Guerrero and Steve Tittle, owner of the Wood Cottage Tea Room and Patisserie in Felsted, took some time to decide on the ultimate winner as it was a very close call between Deacon’s and Thorne, with Thorne just winning on the professional look of their cake.

Steve commented; "Once again it was a joy to be a guest judge in what was a very close run contest. It was great to see such a high standard of organisation & baking skills by each of the teams in the making of the three tier sponge challenge. The presentation of all the finished sponges were exceptional and a big congratulations to the winning team of Georgia & Charlotte of Thorne."
