Reception - Year 2 Admissions Process

Our admissions process is listed below, including how to register and how to book an Open Morning or Stay & Play session. Places will be offered after the Stay & Play sessions.

Reception Entry Admissions Process

If you are interested in your child starting Reception at Felsted we encourage you to visit us and complete the registration process as soon as you are ready. Below is a guideline of the Admissions steps for Reception entry.

By September (one year prior to year of entry)	Attend a ‘Welcome Morning’ open morning event
By October (one year prior to year of entry)	Complete online registration form
November (one year prior to year of entry)	Stay and Play sessions to observe social and learning skills
December (one year prior to year of entry)	Confirm your place - pay deposit to secure Reception place
January - May (year of entry)	We host a number of events for those already confirmed for September entry. Our Admissions team will be in contact with more details.
June (year of entry)	Meet the Teacher - a chance for all new Reception children to meet their teachers prior to starting in September
September (year of entry)	Start at Felsted School

Reception Entry 2026

After visiting and completing the registration process, we will send you a Pre-School Questionnaire to complete so that we can start getting to know your child and their current development stage. We will also ask their current nursery or pre-school to complete the same questionnaire.

The next step is to attend one of our Stay & Play sessions, where children can experience a short classroom-based taster session with our Early Years team and take part in a carousel of structured, child-led activities.

On arrival, we will gently encourage children to go into the classroom without their parents so that they can access the play based activities.

Our team of caring teachers will observe the children as they play and will look at their levels of engagement and interaction so that we can be sure that they will thrive within our Reception environment.

The Stay & Play sessions last around 45 minutes, and we invite parents to stay on-site for refreshments and a short ‘question and answer’ session with the Head of phase.

Offers of places will be confirmed after the Stay & Play sessions and we encourage early booking to avoid any disappointment.

As first time school parents it was daunting to watch our eldest embark upon this new chapter but you couldn’t have made the process any smoother or seamless!

Years 1 and 2 Entry

As well as Reception entry in September, we are often able to offer in-year admissions for other year groups.

Please contact the Admissions Office to discuss your enquiry or find out about availability at our Welcome Mornings.

If you would like to proceed with an application, we will ask you to register and complete a short online application form, where we ask you to send through a copy of your child’s most recent school report and any other relevant reports, as well as a Pupil Information Form. We will also request a reference from your child’s current school.

We will invite your child to join us for a taster day in their current year group and they should bring their current school reading book with them. Prospective pupils will be welcomed by their class buddy for the day and they will join in with normal lessons. We carry out informal assessments as part of the class activity. Taster days can be arranged on an individual basis and places offered once this process is complete.

I wish to thank the Felsted dream team on the superb job you have done this term. We are both so very impressed with the experience our daughter has had to the start of her school life; simple things for us like hearing her progression in reading words in particular when she calls them out on TV or road signs in passing, speaking some Spanish within a few weeks, her writing, her love of books and reading already! Honestly just lovely for us to see.
