Short-Term Stays at Felsted for pupils aged 10 to 13

At Felsted, we welcome pupils aged 10 to 13 for Short-Term Stay. Your child will join the year group that is most appropriate based on your child’s date of birth.  Our Admissions team will advise on which year group is appropriate.

Short-Term Stays at Felsted are for one school term (roughly three months). Shorter stays are not available.

Short-Term Stay pupils join classes at Felsted Prep for timetabled lessons every week. 

Children will study academic subjects including:

• Mathematics
• Sciences - biology, chemistry, physics
• English – literature and language
• Modern foreign languages (as required) – Spanish, French
• Humanities - history, geography, religious studies, personal social health education

Complementing this is a co-curricular programme of activities including:

• Physical education – team games, skills development, health and fitness activities
• Music
• Drama 
• Art 

Short-Term Stay pupils whose first language is not English are offered English as an Additional Language (EAL) support as part of their curriculum. This improves their skills in English and enables them to benefit more fully from their stay at Felsted.

Many pupils board at Felsted Prep; pupils based in the UK and from around the world, full-time and Short-Term Stay boarders are totally integrated.

Felsted Prep has a dedicated on-campus boarding house for pupils aged 9 to 13. This is a comfortable house with a floor for boys and a floor for girls, right at the heart of the school campus. With bright dormitories, modern facilities and spacious social areas, this is a place for pupils to relax. 

The house is led by houseparents, supported by a caring team of staff, including a matron, who looks after everyday needs. Staff members are fully experienced in supporting pupils whose families are based outside of the UK and they are in regular contact with parents. 
 

There is a full programme of activities for everyone to take part in during the evenings and at weekends - pupils use the school’s facilities for independent study, as well as for fun and social activities such as dodgeball, crafting, baking and movie nights.  There are also many trips out, such as a trip to London’s West End to see a show, to professional rugby matches, to trampolining and climbing park and the cinema.

Felsted has an exeat (non-boarding) weekend every half-term, but it is not compulsory for our pupils to leave the school, and the boarding houses remain open with full staffing and activities provided (at no additional cost).

English language proficiency: we are here to support our pupils’ level of English while they are with us and would not expect them to be fluent on arrival, but it is important that your child has a basic understanding of English language to get the most out of a Short-Term Stay with us. Pupils with a CEFR level of around A2-B1 are in a good position to make progress over a Short-Term Stay.

Visitor Visa or ETA: pupils joining for less than six months must ensure they have the appropriate permission to enter the UK as a visitor, for example a Visitor Visa or ETA. Documentation and copies of permission must be provided to Felsted prior to your child’s arrival.

Child Student Visa: a Child Student Visa is currently only required for a stay of six months or more, so a Short-Term Stay at Felsted of three months (one school term) does not require a Child Student visa. UKVI (also known as the UK Home Office) will require evidence that your child is joining a genuine course - Felsted Admissions will provide acceptable documentation for this.

Health insurance: pupils coming to us for a Short-Term Stay must have appropriate health insurance - it is the responsibility of the family to ensure that sufficient cover is in place. A copy of insurance documentation must be provided to Felsted before the child’s arrival.  

A guardian: Short-Term Stay pupils from overseas (and all Felsted pupils from overseas) require a guardian. Please see Felsted’s Guardianship Policy for full information.

An accompanying adult while travelling: if your child is flying, please check with the relevant airline before making travel arrangements as requirements vary. Felsted offers an airport collection service for children arriving alone - please provide full travel details well in advance to arrange this.

Uniform and school essentials: school uniform is worn by all pupils at Felsted and is provided for Short-Term Stay pupils at no cost. This may be good-quality, second-hand uniform and should be returned to the school at the end of the Short-Term Stay. The cost of any damaged or missing items of uniform is deducted from the Short-Term Stay deposit.
