Hockey

Felsted has an enviable reputation for hockey, locally, nationally and internationally. With two floodlit astroturf pitches and many grass pitches, pupils play hockey as a core sport from the age of eight. Hockey is played in the Autumn Term for girls and in the Spring Term for boys, with additional coaching sessions taking place in the non-fixture terms. Summer League Hockey in the Senior School is a very popular weekly activity in the Summer Term.

Felsted’s hockey philosophy is based around character development, self-actualisation and life-long participation. As a core sport taught as part of the PE Curriculum, pupils have plenty of time to hone their skills with highly qualified coaches, a depth of teams and plentiful fixtures. Indeed, several Felstedians have played for their Country at different age levels, with many more playing at Club and County level. Felsted has a close association with Braintree Hockey Club, whose junior section use Felsted's pitches on a Sunday morning and Thursday evening for training and some matches. U14 and U16 play matches at Braintree ground and often move up to play for the Men's and Women's sections of Braintree Hockey Club. Some may also go on to play at other clubs such as Old Loughtonians, Chelmsford and Cambridge Hockey Clubs.

Felsted’s elite players benefit from specialised technical one-to-one coaching, athletic development sessions with our strength and conditioning coaches and regular video analysis sessions. Sports scholarships are available for those playing at a high level from age 11.

Senior Girls' Hockey is managed by old Felstedian and former England U21 player, Loren Willis and Senior Boys' Hockey by old Felstedian, Nick Phillips. Felsted's Hockey Professional, current Welsh National player Jo Westwood, coaches boys and girls at all levels, from the top end of the Prep School.

Felsted's recent hockey success includes the U16 girls crowned National Champions in 2022 and U18 girls reaching the cup semi-finals in 2023. U19 girls reaching the National Finals in 2018 and the quarter finals in 2019. The U13 girls were IAPS National Finalists in 2019. The U13 boys were National Champions in 2016 and National Finalists in 2018 and 2019.
