Meet the Housemaster

I have been House Master of Deacon's since January 2006 and have been at Felsted since September 2001. I live with my wife Fiona and we have a black Labrador called Archie. Previously, I have worked in The City for two years and initially after my post graduate degree teaching at Magdalen College School, Oxford for four years.

Deacon’s has a proud tradition of sporting housemaster’s and I trust my background enables me to join that tradition. I have been fortunate enough to play cricket for Gloucestershire CCC 2nd XI and rugby for London Scottish RFC in my younger days while graduating with a Sports Science degree from UWIC in 1993.  I still continue to play cricket at a more relaxed level with Oxfordshire CCC. I have been Master in charge of Rugby since 2002 and Cricket since 2003 and have been fortunate enough to coach some excellent teams and oversee two sports with many talented youngsters. This role has allowed me to run overseas tours to Australia, France and Italy and as a result seen many Deacons’ boys represent the school abroad. Fiona who graduated in Modern Languages from Hertford College, Oxford in 1997 is currently working for Apple in charge of their European Executive Search.

Both our backgrounds suggest we have a keen competitive streak and a desire to be successful in all that we undertake. The 3 years in the house has seen the house grow successfully and always be oversubscribed for the next year. The environment in the house is one of support and passion for their chosen fields and this has enabled all the boys to feel that success in the classroom, the sports field, the theatre, CCF and the music school all have equal standing and all are encouraged to actively participate in as much as they can, taking advantage of the schools wide range of expertise. The house teams have been successful in our 3 years in the house and the Autumn Term 2008 was no exception with the Junior Indoor Cricket, The Senior Rugby and The Steeps all being won, with a very credible second in The House Shout.

In the house on a daily basis the prefects are given leadership roles to aid the smooth running of the house, as well allow the younger boys role models to follow. Each prefect is given a specific role that suits their talents and they will be supported in growing as an individual who can cope with difficult and challenging situations. The attention to detail is a must for all the boys and this starts on entering the house in year 9. You are expected to respect the house and those in it allowing the atmosphere that they can succeed.  The result being a well rounded house where the boys enjoy living.
